| USAID Cross-Sectoral Urban Training
The Urban Programs Team delivers cross-sectoral technical training and
workshops for USAID staff and partners. The objectives are to:
- Introduce new USAID staff, especially field staff, to the role
of cities in development and multi-sectoral approaches that address
challenges and opportunities associated with urbanization;
- Upgrade or intensify the technical knowledge and skills of USAID
staff who work on urban programs;
- Emphasize USAID's own experience and share lessons learned among
different USAID Missions, regions and bureaus; and
- Promote cross-sectoral approaches in the subject matter and
through collaboration with different offices, bureaus and sectors.
Making Cities Work Training
This multi-sectoral course explores the role of the city in USAID programming touching on issues such as migration, the maintenance and expansion of infrastructure, urban environment and health, local economic development, decentralization and municipal services. Designed for USAID staff, the course will also review the push-pull factors that drive urbanization. While recognizing the negative impacts of urbanization, "Making Cities Work" will emphasize the potential opportunities of urbanization. Participants will leave the course equipped with new knowledge of practical, multi-sectoral ways that USAID programs can "make cities work".
Municipal Finance Intensive Training
The Municipal Finance course will look at how municipalities in developing and transition countries are financed and interventions that promote sustainable financing. The course will address both public and private sources of finance. Special attention will be paid to the financing of municipal infrastructure and services, including the use of bonds, credit ratings, public-private partnerships, pooled financing and other innovative finance. The course will also address key legal and regulatory framework considerations or other pre-conditions to enable sustainable municipal finance.
Speakers Seminar
Beginning in the summer of 2005, USAID will launch the Making Cities Work Speaker Series, a practical seminar series where USAID officers can engage in lively dialogue with urban development practitioners (from the U.S. and abroad) around topics of interest and relevance to USAID (i.e. City Governance or Local Economic Development).
