Near East & North Africa
The Near East & North Africa sub-region comprises diverse socio-economic and human settlement profiles with varying degrees of development and urbanization, heavily influenced by previous or current political unrest and conflict. The sub-region's internal disparities are reflected in the conditions of its cities and have resulted in widely varying domestic needs and priorities: rehabilitation and reconstruction (Lebanon, West Bank/Gaza); poverty alleviation (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco); and urban management and housing needs (Egypt, Jordan).

South Asia
South Asia is experiencing a major demographic transition. During the last fifty years, India's total population more than doubled, while the urban population grew by more than five times. In 1996, the urban population in Bangladesh was 23 million. By 2020, it will increase to 58 million. The urban population in Nepal, during the same period, will grow from 2.6 million to 7.7 million, and in Sri Lanka it will double to more than 8 million.

Southeast Asia
The urban population in Southeast Asia tends to be concentrated in its highly industrialized capitals. Some capitals have grown at a phenomenal speed: Jakarta, for example, grew to 8 million residents in 15 years, one-tenth the time it took New York City to reach the same population.11 Urban population growth rates across Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines will increase three percent annually from 2000-2015. During the same period, rural populations are predicted to decrease slightly: -0.7 percent in Indonesia and -0.1 percent in the Philippines.
